Troubleshoot QuickBooks sync errors in QBO and QBDT with step-by-step best practices, including Sync Errors review, Trigger Sync, record checks, and common fixes.

Updated today

If you run into a sync issue with QuickBooks Online (QBO) or QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT), there are a few standard steps that usually help identify the problem and get records syncing again.

1. Check the Sync Errors page

Go to Settings and select Sync Errors.

From there, you can:

  • Review the exact error message

  • See the object type, such as a bill, receipt, draw, or purchase order

  • Retry the sync using Re-Sync

  • Ignore an error if appropriate

If you already know which type of record is failing, filtering by object type is usually the fastest way to find it.

You can also review Help Center articles for common sync errors and recommended troubleshooting steps:

2. Confirm linked records still exist

Some sync issues happen because a related QuickBooks record was deleted, renamed, or made inactive.

Check whether the related vendor, customer, account, item, class, tax code, or other linked record still exists and is active in QuickBooks.

If a linked record is missing or inactive, update the setup and try the sync again.

3. Review the transaction for missing or invalid data

Many sync errors come from incomplete or invalid transaction details.

Common sync blockers include:

  • Missing required fields

  • Invalid dates

  • Closed accounting periods

  • Duplicate names or document numbers

  • Invalid billable settings

  • Missing linked QuickBooks records

If the error message points to one of these issues, correct the transaction and then retry the sync.

4. Know when to retry and when to investigate further

Use Re-Sync after you have fixed the underlying issue.

If the same error returns immediately, that usually means the root cause has not been fully resolved yet. In that case, review the error message again and confirm the related record setup and transaction details before retrying.

5. Common next steps by error type

Here are a few common troubleshooting paths based on the error you see:

  • If the error says Object Not Found, check whether the linked QuickBooks record was deleted or made inactive

  • If the error is a Business Validation Error, review the related setup in QuickBooks, such as the account, item, or billable setting

  • If the error mentions duplicate names or duplicate document numbers, update the conflicting records so they are unique

7. Contact Support if the issue continues

If you still cannot resolve the issue after these steps, contact Support and include:

  • The exact sync error message

  • The type of object affected

  • Any troubleshooting steps you already tried
